The Level 3 Diploma in
Specialist Support for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

What does the qualification cover?
This qualification provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special schools.

It covers all aspects of Specialist Support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher, bilingual and special needs support and personal development and reflective practice. It is also a must-have for all those undertaking the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning Apprenticeship.

TThis course develops the learner to help qualify them as a classroom assistant and concentrates on the stages from foundation to the end of Key stage 4 including special needs. There are units on numeracy and literacy along with behaviour, communication, health and safety, child protection and assessment. This is the recommended qualification for use in primary, secondary and special needs schools.

Students are required to attend 4 hour in class sessions per week for the duration of the course. Assessments take the form of essays, tables, diagrams and an open book exam. Students need to be aware that further study hours will be required to complete these assessments.

Each student will be assigned an assessor who will both observe them in placement and support them through the course.

Requirements

  1. In order to successfully complete the course you are required to complete a work placement of at least 50 hours. The placement is compulsory for this course will be provided for you so that you do not have the hassle of finding your own placement.
  2. Along with the first set of course materials, students will receive a comprehensive guide outlining what is required of them during the placement, interview preparation, and the types of activities that will be required on the placement (including examples of the types of paperwork that will need to be submitted to your assessor for evidence).
  3. The work placement needs to be for a period of at least 50 hours, though it can be longer if needed.
